Fracking: Science vs. Greed

No sooner did the EPA come out with its finding that Fracking very likely caused pollution of water sources in Pavilion WY; the Big Oil & Gas propaganda machine started with a series of highly questionable responses. They tried to discredit the EPA finding with the most transparent and unbelievable story. A Gasser conglomerate spokesperson said that someone could have opened a well cap and dumped anti-freeze down into the well; implying the contamination found in any wells was an elaborate, organized trick to blame the Frackers.

When that made up tale fell flat, the spokesperson for Big G & O made a quick pivot and said; What happened in Fracking out West might not happen in the Marcellus because the underground rock is different. They had already been saying for years that: contamination from Fracking couldn’t, wouldn’t, didn’t happen out west, so couldn’t happen anywhere. But the latest EPA report shows; they were dead wrong!

As the EPA continues its investigation of Fracking across the country, including neighboring Pennsylvania; the pressure to hurry and issue permits in the NYS’s Southern Tier will grow stronger, because the Gassers are become more desperate. They are afraid that the EPA will continue to discover increasing amounts of scientific evidence showing that Fracking causes pollution of water supplies.

The truth is, we have already reached the point that the Gassers feared all along. Enough real scientific evidence has been found to firmly indicate the dangers that Fracking poses to water supplies, along with the very serious health problems that contamination causes. Science has finally trumped greed to show why Fracking cannot be allowed in NYS.

Any politician who supports Fracking and puts economic funding of their political career ahead of the health and safety of the residents of NYS; now does so at the almost certain risk of never being elected again. If common sense and an appreciation of their true responsibility to their constituents haven’t convinced public officials of the need to currently ban Fracking in NYS; then perhaps self interest and the desire to keep their jobs will.

When all the evidence is weighed, it is virtually assured that natural gas exploitation using the technique of Fracking will be permanently banned. Until then we dare not let the greed of a few landowners and their Big G & O multinational partners overcome the obvious wisdom of not issuing any Fracking permits. The Gassers will spin all sorts of tales and spend all sorts of money on misleading TV ads and campaign contributions to try and tempt local and statewide officials into letting them drill, baby, drill. But an ever increasingly informed public will stand up to the Gassers and in a loud voice at hearings, protests and voting booths; expressing their right to protect themselves from the danger Fracking poses to all of the citizens of NYS. We must support the ultimate triumph of science, common wisdom and our self interest over the greed of a few leaseholders and Big Gas.
